One of my black neighbors rang my doorbell to tell me my kids had opened the fence gate from the backyard to the alley and he'd shooed them back in. (We didn't realize Anand was tall enough to reach that quite high latch, Kavya knows better, Kevin has now actually locked it).

I'm telling you this not to display our poor parenting skills (really, we do try quite hard to keep our kids safe), but because after I thanked him for taking the trouble to let me know, I had a mad impulse to apologize to him for Trayvon Martin.

This is a day when we should all be looking out for everyone's children. Trying to keep them safe.
