Two fish…

Two fish notes:

  • Kavi loves watching the goldfish in our little (10-gallon) aquarium. Kevin worries that she's going to knock it over with all the leaning on it and slapping her palms in excitement against the glass, but it's up against a wall, so that seems unlikely to me. So on Tuesday, while picking up a new aquarium light so she can see them better, I got two tiny black goldfish to add to the two golden koi that were in there. By Friday, all four fish were dead. I have no idea why, but it is very sad. Was the tank too small for four goldfish? (The lady at the pet store told me it would be fine!) Did the new light make the water too hot for goldfish? (Who apparently like it cold.) Were the new fish diseased? (They looked fine at Petco!) I don't even know if it's safe to put new fish in the tank. Maybe I need to dump out everything in there (rocks, plastic plants, etc.), bleach the tank, and start over? Is it safe to bleach a tank? I just don't know. :-( The only plus side to this whole tragic story is that I think I can now get a heater for the tank and get some fish other than goldfish. But still; those koi made it through a summer on our roof and then a year and a half indoors. They had grown as long as my hand. Sad.

  • Yesterday, Kavi ate fish for the first time. No, not the ones from the aquarium -- what kind of a mother do you think I am? I baked some fish sticks, and she loved them. And today I sauteed some tilapia for her with a bit of salt and pepper and she loved that too. I'm afraid our daughter is now firmly in the non-vegetarian camp (she was resisting all meat up until this point, although she does also love scrambled eggs). Sorry, Karina. Mostly, though, this a) will make feeding her easier, and b) give me an ally in the pro-fish-consumption camp. Kevin, his father, and his sister are all anti-fish-eating. They've been known to refer to fish as poison. Kevin's mother, my family, and I love us some fishies. So I win. (What? Parents aren't supposed to use their child as a battleground? Now you tell me...
