Finished revision of…

Finished revision of "Colombo, etc." It was really more of a fine-tuning that a revision; I think I need more feedback before I can see what else to do with this story. For me, it works as is. I just haven't heard from enough people to know if it works for them as it is. I suspect not; at this point, I know so much about these characters that everything I write about them is full of layers and backstory. But that doesn't mean enough of that is evident in the text itself. I wonder if Arvind seems narrow or one-dimensional here. I don't mean him to be. In fact, I see him more as a mass of conflicting impulses. I wonder how he comes across.

The piece is short -- not even seven pages. I'm going to work on "Pieces of the Heart" next, but if it's not too long, I may add a third story. This is the last I'll be workshopped in this class; would like to get as much feedback as possible. I think the third story will probably be "Savitha", which is out of chronology, but so it goes. I drafted that last spring and haven't looked at it since; it'll be interesting to see what I think of it now. Gods, the time just goes, doesn't it? How did it get to be so far from last spring already?

Oh, btw -- I think Dan has convinced me to switch the order of the two pieces. So if you haven't read them yet and plan to, try reading "Colombo, etc." before "Pieces". I think it works better in terms of dramatic tension. Thanks again, Dan...
