Here's my most recent disability anecdote. I was at a conference at UIC a few months ago, where the last speaker was someone with some kind of verbal disability. A stutter was part of it, but there was more to it than that. I found it pretty difficult to understand what she was saying. What I noticed was that not only did everyone at the conference sit quietly and listen attentively during her talk, but after she was done, they engaged her in questions the same way they did any other speaker.
Which, of course, is exactly what they should have done. The interesting part is that I was surprised by it. Which probably says more about me than about anything else.
