I'm moderately pleased with the story I wrote yesterday -- but it's clearly not done. I was trying to work in so much history and political backstory (which is desperately lacking from the rest of the book) that I ended up with a very muddy story. And story is more important. Story is everything. Nalo gave me some kick-ass feedback on that last night, and I think I have a good idea of where to go to make it better. I'm actually hoping to work on the revision today, after I get back from the gym. We'lll see.
We're also racing to finish Silence and the Word in time for WisCon, so I have some stuff to do for that. Write up some promotional material, decide what goes on the back cover, etc. Ugh -- I wonder if I should be trying to solicit blurbs. I can't think who I know who would make for a good blurb for this kind of book. I don't know anyone else who writes this kind of book (which is usually the sort of person you get to write your blurbs; a famous one who does roughly what you do, and whose readers are likely to like your work). Maybe we'll not worry about the whole blurb concept...
How would you describe the book? Might help your journal readers think of similar authors/editors/books from whom to get quotes?
Well, at this late date, it’d need to be someone I know well enough to impose on. So I think it’s not likely to happen…
There are people who have written multi-generation novels, aren’t there?
(What the heck, I’ll field this one.) The multi-generation novel is the other book.
