I’m running into questions about dating things in my SF universe. I really don’t think humans on a colony planet would keep using Earth dates — the year is a different length, for one thing. So they’d probably have their own local dates, I imagine starting with Year One being the year of settlement.
But I’ve got a big multi-species universe, and it’d be nice to have SOMETHING that wasn’t strictly solar system-dependent. Star Trek had ‘stardate’ — which I don’t know if that actually maps onto anything real? And yes, I realize I could go research this on Memory Alpha, but I suspect somone here already knows the answer, and also that y’all might want to opine on how I should set up my dating system for these books.
