Anand: [says something ridiculous, then asks Kavya] What do you think?
Kavya: Mommy, what should I say?
Me: Well, you could change the subject. There’s a saying,”If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”
Anand: Yes! Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said that.
Me: Well, he said many great things —
Kavya: Like, I have a dream!
Me: Yes, and other things, but I don’t think he said —
Anand: Actually, he said: If you can’t think of anything nice to say, you’re not thinking hard enough!
Me: I like that, but I’m still not sure he —
Anand: Yes! And at the end of his videos, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. always says, “All right, everybody dance!”
I stopped trying to correct him at that point, because I want to live in a world where Dr. King is making YouTube videos and encouraging us all to dance.
