Out of Town

Quick note that I’ll be out of town for the next five days; I was invited to do a writing retreat at a friend’s place in Kauai, and since I’ve written almost nothing all summer (there’ll be a post about that soon, I suspect), I decided to take him up on the kind offer. Will be back early morning (red-eye) on Tuesday.

I’m channeling my mother this morning — I think I was feeling guilty about splurging on the plane ticket for this trip (although it came out of my writing account and was paid for with writing money, so it’s all totally reasonable and I am feeling guilty for no good reason except that I get to go on a trip and the rest of my family doesn’t; I’ve promised Kavi that NEXT time I go to Hawai’i, I will definitely take her with me) — so I took five minutes to cook and pack my breakfast this morning instead of planning to buy something at the airport.

Even though my gate was near the Frontera restaurant at O’Hare, so I could’ve gotten something quite tasty for breakfast, I have to say, I like what I made for myself EVEN BETTER than anything I could have gotten there, and it was way cheaper. Toast with salted butter, a scrambled egg, and seeni sambol. Perfect. That’s what, 50 cents of groceries? Not bad!

Of course, if I’d REALLY been channelling Amma, I would have stayed up all night making mas paan (beef curry buns) for the trip, but alas, that was beyond me. Hard to motivate to do that for just me. As it was, yesterday was harried enough that I only slept four hours; I stayed up late and got up early to finish drenching the garden, in the hopes that it will hold until I get back without Kevin having complex watering responsibilities.

I think all he has to do now is water the hanging baskets on the front porch and the veggie patches. Not sure how often he needs to water the veggies — I’ve been trying to give them ten minutes daily, in addition to a deep watering once a week — does that sound right for temperatures around 80F? I know what my perennials need in terms of water, but tomatoes and peppers? New kale and chard seedlings? Relatively new berry bushes? Advice welcome.

Okay — first leg of flight boarding, so off I go…
