A packed church at my father-in-law’s memorial service today — there were hundreds of people in attendance. Ron was tremendously appreciated by his community. Appreciated and very much loved.
More soon, I imagine.
For now, we’re getting ready to head up to San Francisco for our midnight flight (with thanks to Jed for driving, as I am much too exhausted to be safe driving at this point). We should arrive home around 6 a.m. Chicago time, and then I expect we will all sleep the rest of the morning away.
At 12:30, I take Kavi to get her typhoid vaccination for Argentina, and at 2:15, I’m supposed to be at the high school, putting on my robes and getting ready to represent the school board with a speech. I’m still tweaking it, but I think I’ve revised it into something reasonably solid at this point.
“…Here’s the thing – all of our social systems, ALL of them, were set up by people like you and me. People coming together and saying, “If we do this, it will make our children safer, it will make our lives more prosperous, it will help keep a roof over peoples’ heads and food on the table.”
Those initial impulses can be idealistic and high-minded, but they can also ossify over time. ‘The way we decided to do it,’ becomes ‘the way we’ve always done it,’ and that is very resistant to change…”
A little teaser. I’ve managed to get it down to seven minutes, which I think is fine. But now, I’m putting the computer away. Off to the airport…
