Nene

Alex’s property has various birds hanging out. A hummingbird is feeding on a flowering tree outside my guest room window. The roosters are very loud early in the morning, so if you’re not a morning person, that might be a little painful. They also are loud at random times during the day. There are albatrosses nesting on the site, and lots of nenes (Hawaiian geese).

This is a nene (31 seconds), and here are some interesting facts about nenes:

“The Hawaiian name “nene” comes from the bird’s soft, almost gentle call. The literal translation of the word in olelo Hawaii (Hawaiian language) means “to chirp, as a cricket; to croak … whimpering, as a sleeping infant.” The goose has also been known to “moo” like a cow.”
