Demand Avoidance

A little random, but I just ran across a term ‘demand avoidance’ that I haven’t run into before, and I have to say, I definitely see this in me when I’m experiencing long periods of high-stress, and I see it in other people I know even more of the time. Interesting.

I’ll note that per the article below, ‘pathological demand avoidance’ isn’t a formal clinical term yet, and as per usual, we should be careful about armchair diagnosing ourselves or our loved ones.

But that said, sometimes it’s useful just having a term to describe an observed behavior, even if it’s not clinically ‘pathological.’

“People with a PDA profile are driven to avoid everyday demands and expectations to an extreme extent. This demand avoidance is often (but according to some PDA adults, not always) accompanied by high levels of anxiety. “
