D.C. trip: We didn’t stop and read the inscription on this statue, but we did have a lively discussion as we passed re: why all the men get to be fully dressed, and the single woman is mostly naked. Yes, she does get a sword, which is something, but on the other hand, some of the men have swords too, and she’s probably just handing her sword to one of the men anyway.
And I did point out that she was probably not meant to be a real woman (among other things, she is holding the sword by the blade!), but instead was the spirit of inspiration or freedom or some such, but nonetheless, Anand didn’t see why she shouldn’t still get to wear clothes. Fair cop, kiddo.
