- New toys that proved well worth their cost for hours of entertainment on the road: 2 (AquaDoodle and Caillou Xmas movie)
- Excellent toddler nights sleeping on new kid air mattress: 2 (and so worth it)
- Noticeable double-takes from strangers in Ohio rest stops after they realized that Kavi was my daughter: 5
- Hours catching up on desperately-needed sleep while Kevin drove: at least a dozen
- Ridiculously delicious dishes prepared by mother and aunts: oh, about thirty or so (a vast variety of curries, plus stringhoppers, dosai, rice noodles, a horde of sweets and appetizers -- envy my devouring of chicken patties and curry rolls)
- Pounds gained from avid consumption of said dishes: who cares? I'm pregnant, yay! :-)
- Comments by grandparents that we must come back to visit again soon: many
- Adorableness of Kavi at cousin Jehan's massive first holy communion party: incalculable
OK, maybe I’m dumb, but why the double-takes?
She’s so pretty in those pictures!
Oh, they’d see her, smile at her cuteness, and then when they saw me, I think they were startled at how dark my skin is by comparison. Not so many mixed-race couples in more rural parts of the Midwest, I think.
No one was mean about it or anything — they just looked noticeably surprised. It was kind of cute. 🙂
And yes, I love this set of photos of her. Most of the time, Kavi looks more cute than pretty, you know? I don’t know if it’s the fancy dress or the butterfly hair clip (which she *finally* has started to allow me to leave in her hair without immediately pulling it out) or the sunshine or just that she’s hitting a pretty age or what. But fun. 🙂
The dress was a bit pricey, but I fell in love with it when I saw it, and she’ll wear it for the birthday party and her two-year-old Target photo shoot too, so I figure we’ll get decent value out of it. 🙂
I guess I buy the “not many mixed-race couples” thing. I’m from the rural Midwest, remember. Not many races other than “pasty” where I’m from.
I love her hair like this. It’s like a style I might ask my stylist for. And not be able to pull off.
She’s so beautiful. I love Kavi’s eyes in the bottom right photo.
