I finished the Russ essay finally and sent it in — it took a little longer than I’d planned, but no regrets; I’m really happy with how it came out.
Only one problem; it’s too long. They originally asked for up to 3000 words but indicated there was wiggle room; I asked for 4000 for the revision and they said yes, but I’m afraid this version is now 5200 words. I think it’s good like this, but that doesn’t mean they have the space for it (digital is flexible, since I’m being paid for the piece, not by the word, but if they’re doing a print edition, every extra page costs money).
We’ll see what they say — I told them if they needed it shorter, to just give me a hard word count limit, and I’d hack it and send it back to them within 24 hours. Or they can hack it — that’s fine too! Fingers crossed that works for them.
Here are some bits from it, in case you’re curious. Assuming they take it, it’ll be published in a new Feminist Press edition of Joanna Russ’s _On Strike Against God_.
The title is subject to change. I hate titling things.
Thanks to Alec Nevala-Lee, Wailin Wong, Benjamin Rosenbaum, Dan Percival, Mary Salome, Kevin Whyte, and Kavi Whyte for thoughtful feedback on this piece. Any remaining infelicities are mine own.
