Teaching Lit in the Age of ChatGPT

For my Intro to SF class this semester, this is my first time teaching a lit. class in the age of ChatGPT, so that’s going to be interesting. (I was just teaching creative writing last spring.)

I admit, I’m mostly hoping this material is uncommon enough that they’re not going to get much in the way of good results with ChatGPT, and won’t be too tempted to use it. But in case they are tempted, I’m trying to structure the course such that they’re going to have to do a lot of original thinking & writing.

I’m thinking I’m going to have them do:

– a daily reading journal (which will give me a sense of their prose styles, thought tendencies, etc.)

– two short papers (well-scaffolded with workshopping theses, outlines, and drafts in class)

– one novella presentation (having them choose from a selection of contemporary novellas, including mine, hah! — novella recommendations welcome!)

– one final longer paper (it’s been a while since I taught a 200-level lit. class, any suggestion on what’s a good length for a final paper at this level?)

******

Would be interested to hear from other college lit. teachers how they’re approaching this issue.
