I’ve finally reorganized enough of the basement that I can sew again without tripping over things. (Basement re-org is not all done, but I think we should finish it this week, before the semester starts, if all goes well.)
I have a lot of cool fabric leftover from the frantic mask-making era, so have been thinking about what I might do with it. I was thinking that it’d be fun to offer themed items that go along with cookbooks — potholders, for example. I’m never likely to sew enough of them at speed to actually be profitable, but I’m learning more about sewing as I go, so it’s all good.
But I have to admit, I do not love the process of making double-fold bias tape. Does anyone love it? I was tempted to just buy some already made, but a) I’m trying not to spend money I don’t have to right now (it’s been an expensive year, house roof & dentistry-wise), and b) I had some bias-cut ribbon in exactly the right color to coordinate with this cool fabric.
I bought some insulated batting, which is what you need for potholders, and thought I had quilt batting for the other layer, but apparently I don’t. Alas. So I do need to buy that, so I should have it in a day or two. So we’ll pause here, with the fabric cut out and the bias tape made — more soon.
I’m working mostly from this pattern: https://www.etsy.com/…/giant-quilted-pot-holder-with…
…but she called for 2.5″ wide double fold quilt binding, which confused me — I didn’t see anything like that as a standard offering online. The bias strip I had was just a 1″ strip, so it’s made a pretty narrow piece of binding — I think it’ll still work, it’ll just look a little different from hers? Maybe? We’ll see.
