We were all pretty wiped when we got back from the East Coast — we got to the house around 2 p.m., and aside from going out to pick up Ellie from boarding, I don’t think we did anything else yesterday. I lay in bed and read an entire T. Kingfisher novel (a new one just dropped) and then started another one. We ordered takeout from Mama Thai for dinner. I promised myself that I was going to take today off — no work, just rest, for at least one day.
And I woke up today still tired, so I read a little and then went back to sleep, and then woke up, read a little, went back to sleep. Eventually I got up and wandered downstairs where I ate something and read some more. I watched the Death in Paradise 2022 holiday special, which was complicated enough plot-wise that I barely had enough brain to process it.
But perhaps it was unreasonable to expect that I’d go a whole day without working at all — I did some unpacking, and Kevin and I fed the kids, and I ordered groceries to be delivered tomorrow morning. I watched the first episode of White Lotus with Kevin — we’re not sure what we think of it, but we’ll probably try at least one more episode soon.
Still, I was really feeling the urge to do SOMETHING more actively constructive — I am an accomplishment junkie, people. There’s a little part of my brain that is always nagging me to get something done.
So I decided to do a little project that would just be fun. I have a fair bit of geeky fabric left over from the frenzy of mask sewing in 2020, and I’ve been wondering what to do with it, and I decided bags would be a good option. I’ve done a few drawstring bags, and that’s fine, but sometimes you want a zippered bag. So I thought I’d try to learn how to make a lined, zippered bag.
I only made two mistakes that required ripping out, thanks to a handy YouTube tutorial (link in comments), and while the end result isn’t absolutely perfect, stitching-wise, it’s very sturdy, rather adorable (5.5 x 5.5 inches), and done well enough that I’m comfortable selling it.
The fabric is Happy Space Fabric from Penguinhouse at Spoonflower (link in comments), should you want to try sewing something with it yourself. That’s the last of it I have on hand, so the next bag will be something else!
It’s going to take me a little while before lined & zippered bag sewing is intuitive to me, so I think I’m going to try to make a few more in the next few days, get the sequence into my head a little more. (Also some more space scarves and winter tree scarves and tea towels.)
This was fun. I love learning new things.
