So, my agent got back to me about my SF novel, and for somewhat complicated reasons, thinks we shouldn’t go ahead with it right now.
Surprisingly, I agree with him. While it is, of course, disappointing not to get a letter back raving about the book and how it will sell a million copies, I was honestly more than a little relieved to get this letter instead. There’s a lot of things I love about the novel…but as it turns out, I don’t actually love the novel itself, not as it stands.
We’re going to put it aside, let it cook on the back burner. I might come back to it at some point in the future. But I’m honestly excited about diving into a new, different novel set in the same (Jump Space) universe. Not tonight, because I have no brain. But soon.
I kind of want to immerse in it over winter break and try to draft as much as possible then — I have a hard time writing novels in little bits over time; I lose track of things. So a new draft by February? Maybe.
Thanks so much to EVERYONE who gave me feedback on Flight. I learned so much from all your comments. This novel thing — it’s complicated.
I am, of course, very sad to hear this for my own selfish reasons, but I’m glad that you and your agent are in accord about this and can’t wait to see what comes next.
