Chicago, IL The UIC Asian American Studies (ASAM) program, in partnership with CIRCA Pintig, a Filipino-American community arts organization, is presenting a theatrical performance about the intricate stories and lives of Asian Americans and Middle Easterners who are facing the challenges of mental health and finding ways to speak out.
The production, "Silencing Stigma, Speaking Out", consists of a collection of stories collected, transcribed, and written in Fall 2013 by students who were enrolled in ASAM 490 (cross-listed with SOC455), Asian Americans, Mental Health, and Community Engagement. Dr. Rooshey Hasnain taught the course in collaboration with CIRCA Pintig artist-teachers Dr. Angela Mascarenas and Louie Pascasio. These are stories of survival, about finding the meaning of life in a culture fragmented by ambition, and about finding strength in family and in community.
