Yesterday was kind of an astonishing day.

I don’t know how clear I’ve been about what I’m doing in Santa Fe — I’m staying with George R.R. Martin and his wife Parris in a casita (guest house) to try to get some writing done. Roshani came with me for part of the trip, and I admit, I haven’t done so much writing yet, because there are also a ton of really cool SF/F writers who live in Santa Fe, so I’ve been having my own little mini con. Writing today and tomorrow and on the travel day home, though.

Roshani Anandappa and I had planned to cook a Sri Lankan meal for some of the writers; George wasn’t available for dinner, but several others were. So yesterday morning, I made myself a piece of cheese toast (sautéed green chilies, good cheddar, sourdough bread, yummy), and then Roshani and I did a grocery shop (it took three stores to get all of our basic Sri Lankan spices, and finding curry leaves was a real challenge — she only managed to find dried). But we did pretty well, and came back to cook — but in the interim, George had texted, and asked if we wanted to go visit the set of Dark Winds!!!

Neither of us has ever been on a film set, so we said yes, of course. And then we came back to the casita and since neither of us had actually seen the show, we put it on the big tv and watched three episodes while we did cooking prep. And then George scooped us up and we went to the set, except FIRST we got to stop near the set to visit Melinda M. Snodgrass and meet her stunning horses.

So yesterday was lots of petting gorgeous horsies, then meeting stars and producers and tech folks and cultural consultants on a film set, then we came back and cooked like fiends, then we had a great dinner with friends old and new, and THEN, George very kindly screened three of his Howard Waldrop short films for us in his personal home theater, and they were WONDERFUL.

More details and photos of all coming shortly, but can I just say, sometimes I don’t believe this is my life.
