I get to do the quilting part of making quilted potholders today (I’ve been breaking up the making of these into little steps, over several days, so they fit nicely in between syllabus work, and also so I don’t get too intimidated by all the parts I’ve never done before…quilting is weirdly scary to me!).
I tried wavy lines, a variation on straight-line quilting. It seemed like an appropriate choice, giving it a little of the feel of ocean waves, perhaps!
Advantage — I didn’t have to change to the free motion quilting foot. It’s a little unnerving just making wobbly lines — they looked sort of terrible at first. But the tutorial I found assured me that it’d look fine when the whole thing was done, and I think they’re right. Somehow, when you get enough wonkiness together, it starts to look intentional, and even good.
Now I just have to decide whether to do the paired potholder with vertical lines too, or with horizontal lines. I can see arguments both ways. Quiltling is a little tiring, though (on your hands and arms and shoulders), even on something this small, so I’m going to take a break and do something else for a while, before coming back to quilt the other potholder. Which means you have a little time to opine, should you care to.
Vertical or horizontal? Speak now, or forever hold your peace…
