Garden Log 1/14/22

I have placed one of my seed catalog orders. 2 hours of happy perusing of seeds, with a British murder mystery playing in the background — is there a better way to spend a Friday night in January?

I have bought FAR more seeds than I can possibly plant in my garden, but that’s the best part — I will germinate lots of seeds into little seedlings, and then give most of them away to my neighbors in the Oak Park Area Garden Club group. A $3 packet will often have 100 seeds in it, so even if only half successfully germinate, you’re looking at 50 plants — and I probably only have room for 1 or 2 of those, so LOTS to give away.

I did this the last two years, and it’s become one of my favorite aspects of gardening. Gardens are incredibly good at multiplying joy. YAY.

I am particularly amused this year by the names of my carrots: Black Nebula, Atomic Red, Cosmic Purple, Lunar White. šŸ™‚ The tomato pictured is Brad’s Atomic Grape. (I like Blue Berries better for taste, but I grew Brad’s the last two years, and it’s undeniably pretty.)
