I did offer to buy cards for her class, but Kavya loves making them -- all week, she's been working on these, for ten to fifteen minutes per card, twenty-two in all. My favorite is the United States of Valentine, but really, I love them all -- individualized for every member of her class, made with affection and attention. Kavi's been saying she wants to be an artist for years, but I didn't really take it seriously, because every kid wants to be an artist at some point. I still don't know if she has any talent, or ever will. But perhaps the largest part of being an artist is just loving the work itself, being willing to pour your time and labor into it. She's got that part down.
