Recent progress on the house:

I love the mudroom windows; they should bring so much light into the kitchen. Each of these openings will house a pair of double-hung windows. (I think that's the right term.)

This is the view from the kitchen into the space above the mudroom. Today, Dobek and his crew are installing some steel beams. House not fall down! Yay!

  1. This is the part of construction I really enjoy. Not only seeing the plans become 3 dimensional, but all the fresh material smells: wood framing, the exterior sheathing, curing mortar and concrete. Of course there are times when a workman uses an obscured corner as a urinal :^P, but overall it’s construction in motion. Oops, that paraphrase sounds familiar… sorry.
I hope all the doors and windows are ordered so they can be put in place as soon as the openings are ready for them. The wood shouldn’t get wet before you close it in or it will smell musty while they are trying to finish the interior.

I know — I’ve been going by and walking through the site once a day, and it’s so exciting. I love walking into my pantry and my powder room, now that they exist. 🙂 And the wood does smell great. 🙂 So far, no urine as far as I can tell…

The windows and exterior doors are ordered, although not that long ago. It’s supposed to be fairly dry the next few weeks, fingers crossed. They take the roof off next week. Eep.

  3. Roof coming off? Sounds like the imaginary bulls eye that is on trailer parks inviting tornados to hit there. (Rain in your case)
Just be sure you aren’t changing clothes or bathing when the news helicopters are flying around… Much less the workmen working up there.
Make sure they don’t rip off more than they can rebuild in a day. And keep those blue cover tarps handy just in case.

Heh. We’re not actually living in the house during construction, so no fear of accidental nakedness on my part. What the contractors are doing, on the other hand…

I think Dobek is going to try to schedule it for a 3-4 day clear stretch, just in case. We’ve been very lucky with the weather so far; it’s only rained on the weekends since the project started!
