If you have ten minutes, this is well worth a browse -- a 1900s Indian cookery book, which just with a brief skim of contents and the heading of each section gives a vivid picture of colonial India. Also, if you are dropped there by a time-travelling machine, this book will set you up nicely to run an English gentleman's household, with tips on things like cleaning kid gloves and pickling vindaloo to send back home to friends in England.
I was amused to note that incorrect use of the word “inflammable” is by no means recent. (See item 507.)
