It’s that time again –…

It's that time again -- time to volunteer! SH is *desperately* in need of a second art editor (and ideally a third). No artistic skill is needed, and pretty minimal computer skills too. No knowledge of HTML is necessary! If we don't get a volunteer, I'll keep doing it, which means that the galleries will probably go up late, because timeliness is not always one of my virtues. I hate it when we put things up late. It makes me cranky. And I've been cranky enough lately (although to be fair, I woke up in a gloriously good mood this morning for no particular reason). So here's the details -- please consider volunteering!

Please note: Staff at Strange Horizons are not allowed to submit poetry, fiction, music, or artwork to the magazine. They are allowed (and encouraged) to write articles and reviews for us, but those are generally unpaid. Please keep these restriction in mind when considering applying for a volunteer position with our magazine.

Art Editors

The art editors at SH are responsible for a number of monthly features in the department: illustration, gallery, and cartoon. They usually divide up the jobs between them (but we'd like each art editor to know how to do all the jobs).

The illustration editor is responsible for coordination with the senior fiction editor to selecting an artist for the monthly fiction feature. The art editor contacts the artist, negotiates a deadline, accepts the finished piece, crops spot illos to be used throughout the story, and sends the final illo and completed layout (or spot illos with indications of layout) to the webmaster and sends the completed artist questionnaire to the treasurer for contracts and payment. Access to a graphic design program that can crop images is necessary for this job.

The gallery editor is responsible for selecting an artist to showcase in the gallery. The editor coordinates with the artist a selection of 8-10 pieces and also lays out the webpages of the gallery, which are submitted to the webmaster. For the monthly cartoon, the editor lays out the cartoon. In addition, the gallery editor is responsible for updating the artist database with new submissions from artists and for acknowledging submissions. The abilities to view and resize images, to edit text files, and to ftp files are necessary for this job.

(Susan, Jed, can you send a version of this out to your sf-club alumni lists?)
