Morning resin work. I was talking with a friend at the farmer’s market, and they said they saw how much I was doing with resin, and it must be like a full-time job now, so I thought I’d clarify that it’s definitely not. Resin has to cure between layers, so there are long stretches where nothing is happening.
Typically these days, I spend maybe 15-30 minutes in the morning, and then the same in the evening doing a resin pour. And every few weeks I slice a bunch of fruit and put it in the dehydrator, and every week or two, I gather flowers for pressing, and every few days, I gather flowers for desiccating. And there’s some time cleaning up, and some time organizing.
So that’s oh, another 30-60 minutes / day? It’s a little hard to measure, because it’s usually done amidst other gardening tasks, which I’m not doing for the business, particularly; I’d be doing them regardless. I do some weeding, do some mulching, pick some flowers, bring them inside to press or desiccate, cut some and put them in vases for the house. It all gets a little muddy. 🙂
But maybe an average of 7-10 hours / week on actual resin-related work right now? Plus the time for tracking orders, packing, and shipping, though some of that is done by my assistant.
And overall, I’m operating at a loss right now, if I factor in my time. It’s fine, because I have a day job that actually pays the bills, and I’m interested primarily in covering my art supply costs. The hope long-term is that it eventually makes a real profit, and that it also perhaps develops into something I might comfortably call serious art?
But in the meantime, I’m having fun. I try not to work on it if it’s making me tired or stressed. That’s what dealing with backlogged e-mail is for.
