Garden Log 7/31/23

Slowly building out another bed — this morning was mostly pulling out some more of the weeds and watering, but with a little rearrangement too.

I realized this morning that I could move my brightly-flowering tropicals (like that purple duranta) from the overcrowded bit of back deck into the bare spots in the new bed, and they’d provide lots of color. A little bit of extra hassle, picking them up and moving them, but worth it for a few months of nice display.

Really liking this new coneflower, “Cheyenne Spirit” — the pink and orange on the same plant is just so lovely. (From Good Earth, I think?) And I haven’t had kniphofia (aka torch lily / red hot poker) in my garden before — delightful orange burst of color. Tempted to go back to Home Depot and get one or two more of them — I’d originally thought I’d just do a single specimen plant, but I’m now thinking they’d look even better repeating across the bed. And repeat the coneflower too, or do a multiple of it in one place for a more dramatic effect? Hmmm….

Best bit about doing a little watering while you weed is that you can wander under the sprinkler every time you get a little too warm. 🙂 And as a bonus, the weeds come up easier in the just watered areas.
