It’s Small Business Saturday — do you have a small business you’d like to promote? Yours or someone else’s? Please drop a brief description of what you sell in the comments, with one (!) link!
Yesterday was honestly a tough day in the store — the temperature plunged and I hadn’t realized it, so I was underdressed going in, and just freezing even walking to the car; it was hard to motivate to go, and even after the shop warmed up with the heat on, I just couldn’t seem to get my feet warm.
Luckily, Kavi came in with me, so we could work on her college essays together during quiet times at the shop, so she helped me carry things in and hang the holiday greenery, and once we’d finished working on the essays, Kavi was actually happy to watch the shop for me (I pay her, of course), so I could go home for the afternoon and finish up some wine bottle stoppers (hard time keeping those in stock! They’re wildly popular…) and just rest a little.
Thanksgiving was really fun — so nice to socialize a bit, after so long just working all the time — but also kind of wiped me out! I was feeling pretty overwhelmed by the end of the day — just exhausted, and my wrists were hurting badly. Apparently even the much reduced cooking I did for Thanksgiving this year is too much for my stupid injured wrists. AND I had an appointment with an orthopedics guy for Monday to finally get them x-rayed and see if there’s something more serious going on, but it turns out that he’s just a foot and ankle guy, and I need a hand person, so I have to call back and try to reschedule, gah…
I’m starting to freak out a little that I’ll need surgery, and casts, and then those won’t work, and I’ll have years of trying to deal with them and the ongoing pain — really don’t know how I can function without my wrists. Everything I do requires them. Kevin says the voice recognition programs have gotten much better, so I should be able to write at least. And I guess I can employ more help with the crafting — but the fun of it is often directly connected to using my hands. Sigh. Trying not to catastrophize — I’m not usually prone to that, but I guess almost six months of daily pain is getting to me.
But putting the wrist thing aside, today is much better than yesterday — I dressed holiday festive, to brighten my spirits, and wore my serious winter coat (what I call my sleeping bag coat), WITH gloves AND scarf. So I wasn’t cold at all coming in to the store. And the sun is out, and I’ve made myself a cup of elderflower tea.
I’ve had several sales already in the first hour (yesterday was cold and grey and I think people were as shocked as I was by the sudden cold drop and did NOT want to go to an outdoor shopping mall, so I think Kavi managed to sell just two pairs of earrings all day). So all is well now, and Small Business Saturday is off to a good start.
