Hoping for a referral to orthopedics

Note that my wrist injury (I think it’s de Quervain’s tenosynovitis) continues, two months in, and I have finally given up on hoping that it fixes itself with rest, ice, ibuprofen, and a brace, and have put in a call to my doc, hoping for a referral to orthopedics.

Things that aggravate it — using a knife (so cooking has been very limited, sigh), turning the wheel quickly (have to be careful when driving), pushing open the heavy doors in BSB on campus (have to reach across my body and use my left hand, awkward), reaching the wrong way with my hand unthinkingly (which I still do several times a day), trying to pick up a full mug of tea, or a book. Writing by hand (even a signature is difficult, anything more is impossible). Shaking hands with someone. All of these cause sharp stabbing pain.

Also difficult are things like pulling weeds and digging, stirring cooking food or resin, lifting anything at all heavy. And while I’ve tried to compensate with my left hand, that also starts making that hand hurt after a while (unaccustomed use), so I’ve had to be cautious about that too. I can’t afford to have both hands out of commission. I need my hands for EVERYTHING.

So I’ve been in frequent pain for the last two months, and also much less able to DO things, which is undoubtedly making me more short-tempered than normal, apologies. I’ve been reading a lot, grateful that my Kindle is light, and I can mostly use my forefinger to navigate it.

Many consequences for this damned thing, not least is that typing makes it worse, so I’m really trying to limit typing. Which is why I’ve been quieter than usual here. I just posted several paragraphs in a local politics group, and now my wrist hurts, sigh. Time for more ibuprofen and ice. Hope the doctor’s office calls back soon.
