Experimenting with a new material, resincrete

Having a weird morning — I got up normally and had some breakfast, but then got a stabby headache. Took some ibuprofen and went back to bed, and it was almost noon before the headache finally subsided.

At which point I had to throw on clothes and drive out to Naperville for scheduled car routine maintenance, so I did that, and I feel okay now, but groggy, I think mostly from the weird sleep.

Maybe it’s all still recovery from the colonoscopy? Maybe it’s a lack of typical caffeine and meds? All weird and frustrating — I feel like I’m losing the whole day. Classes start next week, and there are so many things I’d hoped to do before summer ended.

Oh well.

Here’s one thing I did over the weekend –experimenting with a new material, resincrete. It’s a powder you mix with water, much simpler to work with than two-part epoxy resin. I’ve mixed it with blue mica powder here, and I like the result — lovely color and it’s got a nice texture to it, smooth, almost like ceramic.

It’s porous, so if I actually want to use this as a plant pot, I’ll need to add a sealer, but maybe just on the inside? You can seal it with epoxy, but that would make it shiny — I’d rather keep more of a matte finish. Will need to experiment. Also need to drill a hole in the base for proper drainage.

The little square container works as is, I think, as a pen holder, but maybe I’ll seal it too — if you were going to use it in a bathroom, for example, for make-up brushes, you’d want it to be waterproof.
I still want to try working with actual concrete, on the to-do list. But this was interesting! I’m not sure how it’ll do with inclusions — another thing to experiment with. Dried flowers, glitter, etc.

It has a fast working / setting time, about an hour from mixing to unmolding; so you can try different things pretty quickly, much more so than with two-part epoxy. It’s more expensive (I think) and you can’t get nearly the same coloring effects as you can with resin — it’s its own thing. Interesting.
