This is transfer paper – you buy a sheet, press it onto the clay face-down, rinse the backing off with a little water. Similar to temporary tattoos, though not exactly the same stuff.
Unfortunately, they turn out to be more delicate than I realized – my first batch baked at the clay’s recommended temperature burned, alas. Kavi thought they still looked nice in an antique-y sort of way, and I guess I agree, but I was too frustrated with the result to want to do anything with them, so into the bin they went.
I tried with two more sheets (Halloween-y!), and those went better, although the ones closer to the heating element still browned more than I wanted. I was happy with enough of them to make a few jewelry pieces, though, which I’ll add to the shop tomorrow during my shift. I sealed them with UV resin, which isn’t technically necessary, but should improve durability, and I think gives them a more finished look.
Eliana photographed them for me, and calls them ‘sock earrings,’ which I think is very cute. If you want any of these, per usual, comment on the photo and let me know, and I’m happy to pull them for you for local pick-up or shipping. Earrings $15 / Necklace $18 / shipping $6.
What I’d really like to do is learn how to print onto transfer paper, so I can use my own designs (or Kavi’s) eventually. Step by step.
