Planted as a bulb in spring. They’re not hardy in my zone, so if I want to save it, I’m going to have to dig it up and store it over the winter, like dahlias and gladioli. I might just plant them in containers next year, and bring them in to be house plants in the winter.
I was watching Gardener’s World this morning, and Monty Don was saying that he was shifting away from growing tropicals that need to be lifted and stored, leaning towards more eco-appropriate-to-his-climate plants.
I’m not sure I understood why it was an issue, though, other than the labor you’re choosing to put in? Is there an ecological reason not to grow a few warmer zone plants? I know the majority of your garden should be native, ideally, but I would be sad to give up growing dahlias…
