Photos from Buenos Aires

Kavi sent along some photos from Buenos Aires — on Saturday, they had an expedition to a rural estancia (farm/ranch) and got to ride horses. (Or, as she said, got to sit on the horse and have it walked around in a circle…).

She didn’t find that scary (how could you? look how adorable her horse is!), but she did find it a little nerve-wracking when they were riding in a carriage and she was on the outside and there was nothing to hold on to…but she survived. 🙂

Kavi likes meat, so she enjoyed the farm meal which was empanadas plus something like five different kinds of meat — they brought around sausage, then a different sausage, then beef, then chicken, then a different chicken. But she felt bad for the vegetarians, who just got one bowl of food.

Kev and I were trying to think where you could go to do study abroad in Spanish and still get great, interesting vegetarian food, and I was having a little trouble. Maybe in Spain? Not Argentina, I think, especially not in winter.

I think Kavi’s starting to actually enjoy the trip, though they do keep them very busy, and she would prefer a little more downtime. We chatted for a long time last night — glad we got her on WhatsApp, so we can chat at length for free!

A typical day has them up and out the door by 8:30, with school starting at 9:30, three hours of Spanish lessons, lunch and then some afternoon activities, done at 5:30 – 6, takes an hour to get home on public transit, and then she has two hours of downtime, but also has a lot of homework that she’s usually doing then, with dinner at 9, and bed not too long after. Whew.

Kavi was unscheduled on Sunday, and sounded very relieved about that — she spent a lot of the day sleeping. Hopefully she’s got the hang of things now, and will be able to fit in a little more fun.

This second week, they aren’t expected to go straight home after school, and apparently the kids are talking about going shopping, going to a movie (the new Little Mermaid, in Spanish), or maybe even going dancing (although I’m not sure they’ll able to find someplace to dance that’s open to them between 7-9-ish. We’ll see!

(Kavi’s in the green jacket, kindly loaned to her by her host family, so she’s no longer freezing. So that’s good!)
