Wiscon lets you add stickers with your pronouns to your name badge. Although I generally would say I’m cisgender, the truth of the matter is that I don’t feel particularly attached to any gender. And I definitely have no preference in the matter of pronouns; whatever you want to use for me is fine with me.
I do wonder whether we might be moving away from gendered pronouns altogether — it’s not as if we really need them for anything.
My daughter and her friends use ‘they / them’ as the default for all of them, whether they’re cisgendered or not, which I think is fascinating. They don’t seem to miss he / she / him / her even a little bit.
Some languages gender everything heavily — in French, if I’m remembering right, masses of objects have genders?
What would happen if we stopped noting gender in our default language at all?
(I have no particular agenda or argument here, just pondering questions. On an individual level, I think people should be called what they want to be called.)
