I mostly dressed Kavi, with a little help from my dad, who held the sari fabric taut while I did the pleating. It’s possible to dress yourself in a sari (I’ve done it several times now), but it’s easier with someone to help! And my dad has of course done this several hundred times for my mother…
If you want the sari to stay nicely in place while you’re moving around actively, a few safety pins are key — including one that typically goes behind your left shoulder blade, which I find pretty impossible to place by myself.
I’m sure the village women in Sri Lanka, who often wear sari daily, would laugh if they saw my attempts. And my pleating is definitely not up to my mother’s standards of neatness and precision!
But for a diasporic South Asian, I think I do okay. I’m hoping Kavi gets used to wearing sari, and feels comfortable enough in it that she can just throw it on whenever she feels like wearing one…
