Dividing some hellebores today — it’s not the recommended time, but this is when I have time / energy to do it, so it’s getting done now.
The process is simple — first dig it up (I usually use a spearhead spade and dig in and lever up a bit in a circle, moving around the plant, until it’s loosened enough to lever relatively easily out of the ground.
Then, divide it — I just divided it roughly in half, but I probably could’ve gotten three reasonable sized plants if I’d been careful.
Then replant (I put one back in the same spot in back, and the other in a new spot in the front, with my other hellebores).
Give them a big drink of water immediately, and keep well-watered for the next few weeks. That’s it!
(Hellebores also supposedly propagate from seed, but may not breed true.)
