Most of my hellebores are still budding, rather than blooming, but they’re starting to pop now. Give them a week! That purple one on the right is big enough to divide, so I’ll be digging it up later in the season, dividing it in two, and replanting in two different spots.
In theory, division is best done in September or October, but I’ll never remember to divide them (or remember the flower colors), so I’ll divide fairly soon.
Dividing is best accomplished by digging the whole plant, washing the crown free of soil in order to make it easier to see what you are doing, and then cutting between the growth buds with a sharp knife. If you leave at least three buds in each division, the plant will recover more quickly.
