Serendib Garden

I’m having trouble figuring out how to landscape well with butterfly bush; I don’t love it where it is. But still, nice to have lush, drought-tolerant blooms this time of year, and I do see butterflies on it…

Just planted this new hardy hibiscus, giant blooms. Fingers crossed it takes well. Not sure if it’s really supposed to be blooming now — maybe yes? Maybe earlier? My neighbors have some big ones that were blooming weeks ago.

The roses are putting out a few blooms in their second flush — David Austin’s “Crown Princess Margaretha”.

The cardinal flowers are finishing up, but I’ve really enjoyed how long-blooming they are — I think four solid weeks of color, which is pretty impressive. I put in one plant last year (pictured), just added another a little further down the bed. (With a rather spare begonia basket behind).

Native purple prairie phlox (wine-cups) decided to throw out another bloom, just for fun. I think this is probably my favorite native — that saturated color!

I love how papery-transparent the blossoms are.

If you get them in the ground early enough, sometimes they get their roots grown enough to be hardy overwinter and come back for you.

I don’t remember the name of this one, but it’s a cutie. And yum.
