HOTEL

We’ll be booking a set of rooms at the Carleton (once we know roughly how many are coming), which is a nice local hotel literally a block from our house.  We’re currently expecting my dad, Sharmi’s family, and Lakshi’s family to be staying at my house — we can cram in at least  a few more on air mattresses if you’d like!  Please let us know ASAP if you’re planning to stay at the Carleton, and if so, which nights.  https://www.carletonhotel.com

AIRPORTS

We’re roughly equal distance from O’Hare and Midway.  Depending on timing, we may be able to do airport pick-ups, but if not, an Uber or Lyft to my house is usually around $30-$60 (about 30-45 minutes, depending on traffic), and there are taxis as well.  You can also take the Blue line from O’Hare into the city and back out again to the Harlem stop in Oak Park (a few dollars, about 90-minute easy ride); from there, it’s just four blocks to my house, so you can either walk down or get a pick-up.

SCHEDULE

Thursday, May 18 — my dad arrives in town; others are welcome to show up, and we will feed you!

Friday, May 19 — I’m free that day, and happy to take people sightseeing in Chicago.  My kids will be in school until 3:30 or so.   Some of the great things to do are the Architecture riverboat cruise, the Art Institute and other museums, shopping on the Magnificent Mile, the Lincoln Park Zoo (free, great for little kids), Maggie Daly Park, Navy Pier (some amusement park rides, the Brookfield Zoo (bigger).  And in our neighborhood, there’s Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and studio tour, the Unity Temple architecture tour, the Pleasant Home architecture tour — Oak Park is big on architecture.  Also two cute shopping / eating districts, all in easy walking distance.  Let me know if you’re coming in early, and we can make plans!

Saturday, May 20th — some of you will be in town, casual dinner at our house around 5-9 p.m., friends are welcome — probably Chicago pizza and salad, probably some of my rice and curries too.

Sunday, May 21
11 – 1:  lovely brunch!  Location TBD.  (Casual or dressy, your choice — people might want to come casual and change before conservatory.)

(From 1-2, I could use a few cousins to help with decorating the event space — we can’t get in earlier than that; let me know if you can help)

2 – 5:  Oak Park Conservatory for high tea (little sandwiches, cake and cookies, tea and coffee scones and clotted cream and jam, tea and coffee, restaurant fried short eats), speeches, music, and dancing — saris and similarly festive clothes preferred!

5 – 7 p.m.: formal festivities end, but we may extend and just hang out at the Conservatory for more dancing.

7 p.m. — anyone still around, we can either go out for dinner, or have some food delivered back at our house. If anyone’s still in town on Monday / Tuesday and wants to do tourist stuff, I’m free to take you around for that too, just let me know.  I can also potentially loan out my car, but it only seats five.

Ask if you have questions! .
