Lori Rader-Day came and took me out for a belated birthday lunch (and much writing / publishing conversation, per usual), at Oak Park’s Crepas Culichi. They really do the celebratory vibe so well — note the heart ice cubes in Lori’s coke!
She got the Huevos Divorcée (note how the eggs are sharply separated — one with green salsa, and one with red — funny!). I got the savory poblano crepes + avocado, delish.
But the star was the mermaid cocktail, which is not just adorable, but served with dry ice in that little metal heart (tea strainer?) You have to be careful with dry ice, as it can be fatal to ingest. But this seemed a very safe method of using it, with the heart trapped under a giant ice cube, so you had to actually lift the ice cube out to even touch the metal heart.
The bubbles were super-cool, and the drink was tasty: tequila, triple sec, blue curaçao, lime juice. Very fun!
And yes, that’s what you have to endure if you have a meal with me. I will stop you from eating until I’ve photographed the food. Now you know.
