Editing to note: I didn’t post this in an attempt to guilt anyone about staying in a larger house. I love my big house, and I’m going to have a hard time leaving it when it’s time. I get that.
(And as a working artist, if we downsize when we don’t need four bedrooms anymore, I’m still going to need studio space for all my supplies — we’re talking about getting a small house with a garage we can convert to a studio.)
But I do think it’s worth thinking about what structural elements make it difficult for seniors to downsize (lack of appealing housing options in their area, for example), and why we don’t have more affordable family-size housing for younger folks with kids.
