Am I stretching the class / caste barriers implausibly far?

More Sri Lanka research questions. It’s 2016, and a 12-year-old Negombo girl is going out on the ocean in the early morning with her somewhat unconventional fisherman grandfather, and is expecting to get in the water. What would she wear?

I know what I saw at Mt. Lavinia beach when I went swimming with Kavi back in 2019 — I think both women and girls wading there mostly wore blouses and long skirts? But I’d like her to have more freedom of movement, if possible.

Second question — the grandfather is a fisherman. We don’t know anything about the grandmother yet. His daughter is a preschool teacher, and has married a professor (somewhere around 1990, I think).

Am I stretching the class / caste barriers implausibly far? I am willing to make the mom stunningly beautiful, if that would help. 🙂

(Suchetha Wijenayake, thanks for the pic.)
