(Buzzed from the school board meeting per usual), reading all the FB local forums with folks freaking out that Oak Park has stepped up to host migrants.
Oak Park mounted a massive volunteer effort in the last 48 hours to get people indoors when Chicago hit freezing temps at night, with food and coats and blankets and tents, plus a church opened its doors to house hundreds of families in the basement, plus an emergency vote from the Village (we are a sanctuary city) pledging some financial support – tremendous kudos to all involved. I know a lot of you got very little sleep last night. Know that you saved lives.
And still, we have so many people complaining that we’re not spending that money on ‘our’ people. It makes me feel ill to read.
And yet, I don’t think most of them would actually walk by a freezing toddler on the street.
I am so tired of all the tribalism. Your people, my people.
