TV Report:

  • Kev and I started Will Trent yesterday (Hulu), and I really liked the first two episodes. Will is an agent for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the show has a great mix of interesting and appealing characters, funny dialogue, good plot tension. Kev had had somewhat tell him that the protagonist was sort of like Monk, and we wouldn’t say that — closer to how Sherlock is portrayed in Elementary. Emotionally complex, deeply observant, thoughtful. Oh, and dyslexic.
  • Kev and I also watched the first episode of Beef (Netflix), which I didn’t think was going to be my kind of thing from the description, but which was quite engaging. A little too tense for my mood a lot of the time, so I don’t know if we’ll move through it quickly — we’ll see. Well done, though!
  • I’ve started rewatching Voyager (Paramount) (third time through, I think). It’s good background TV for doing chores, because I don’t really mind if I miss chunks of dialogue when I wander out of the room to put something away, or get focused on a task for a bit. I’d forgotten just how many holodeck / out-of-body experiences there are in the first couple seasons; I guess the writers were trying to figure some way to keep an ongoing voyage through far space entertaining, rather than just meet-new-species-of-the-week. They maybe overdid it a bit. 🙂

I’m also startled by how much the sexism is noticeable this time around — I mean, the characters aren’t so often actively sexist, but there are just a lot of comments about how women are, whether a woman can be captain of a ship (including from Q, which is just weird), the Kazon (main conflict in first seasons) being a super-sexist society, comments on how Janeway (who is the first Starfleet woman captain we’ve had leading a series) manages to be both strong and feminine, the fact that she has a Gothic romance novel as her holodeck fantasy, etc. and so on…it’s a bit much!

I don’t think I noticed it nearly as much the first time around, though, and possibly even the second. Good sign that times are changing, I suppose.

  • We’re continuing to watch Ted Lasso (AppleTV) with Kavi, continuing to enjoy.
  • We’re continuing to watch Picard (Paramount), season 3 — I am really pretty darn impressed at how they’ve combined serious fan service with a good storyline, very classic Trek in feel. Hope it finishes strong! Looking forward to the return of Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, and the new Section 31 movie.
  • We’re continuing to enjoy Abbott Elementary (Hulu), even if it sometimes a little too real for teachers.
  • Mythic Quest (AppleTV) is growing on me, though I don’t really feel compelled to come back to it after an episode — not quite enough plot tension / forward momentum? We’re on episode 7 now. Maybe that will pick up, but regardless, it’s entertaining when we do watch it.
  • I finished the first season of Beyond Paradise — enjoyed it.
  • Brokenwood Mysteries (Acorn) have started up again, enjoying — the first episode of the new season is a musical theme. 🙂

  • new episodes of Sister Boniface (Britbox) mysteries too…

  • and Gardener’s World (Britbox)
  • I’m still watching Grey’s Anatomy (Hulu) (and perhaps will be for the rest of my days…)
  • I still need to get back to Poker Face (three episodes in).
  • I still need to get back to Severance (two episodes in).

Whew.
