Meant to tell y’all about an absurd moment on Tuesday — I opened the back door, ready to stride out and attack the new semester full force — only to find a giant spiderweb across the door. I didn’t want spiderweb in my hair, so automatically jumped back — and then I had to stop and consider.
Was the universe reminding me that we’d just had my mother’s funeral the day before, and it was fundamentally absurd to try to go in to work as normal the next day, and I should just go back to bed and pull the covers over my head?
Maybe. But instead, I ended up ducking under the spiderweb (because I didn’t have the heart to just knock it down), and going in to teach. Which was fine, in the end. And the spiderweb was gone when I headed in today, so maybe the universe didn’t really have a message for me after all.
But it was a funny start to the semester.
