A nice photo of my parents, all dressed up. My cousin Dylan posted a lovely tribute to my mother on his wall, in Tamil. For those of us (like me) who don’t read Tamil, he kindly sent a translation:
“Cintha Aunty was my father’s eldest sister—a truly remarkable aunt. She moved from Negombo to the United States. While she was in America during the riots in Sri Lanka, seven of her siblings were stranded on the island. She worked tirelessly to sponsor her younger sisters and brother to come to the US. Had it not been for Cintha Aunty, we might well have perished in Sri Lanka. Although I didn’t talk to her much when I was young, I deeply felt the kindness flowing from her heart to our family. She was the one who kept our family united; she constantly worried about us, a concern that weakened her mind. Once, while I was reading a book about plants, she spoke to me: “No matter our age, we must always keep learning. We need to stay determined, learn about life, and study new things. You cannot stop learning just because you get older. Learning new things in your later years keeps your mind young.” Some adults really need to hear that advice! Mental illness had robbed the next generation of the chance to experience Cintha Aunty’s presence, but my generation continues to spread the kindness she embodied. Rest in peace, Cintha Aunty; we love you always and will see you in heaven.”

Original Tamil (Dylan taught himself, very impressive!):
Rest in peace Cintha Aunty,
