You know how I’ve been kind of stuck on writing the last few years? Well, I seem to have got to some kind of tipping point, because I am suddenly unstuck. The words are coming fast and easy — maybe because what I’m writing right now is memoir, so I’m not needing to invent, just remember (which is hard enough these days), record, and frame into something semi-coherent.
I’m not sure exactly what this will end up as; I may fictionalize it eventually. But right now, the trickiest thing is that I’m writing about my exes, and I want to tell the truth, but I also don’t want them to feel bad reading it. None of them were bad people, or treated me badly, after all. But they still might not like my take on them, or us, thirty years later. A weird line to walk.
The ocean helps, though. I go stand in it, and stop thinking for a while, and come back to the page clean.
Kaua’i.
