No Genius bar on this island

This is mostly for people who work with me. My Mac laptop died yesterday, and there is no Genius bar on this island.

I have a loaner from my friend, but it’s a PC that I am finding wildly difficult to adapt to. I can draft okay, thank all the gods, or this writing retreat would be very doomed, but anything else results in lots of errors, windows opening wildly, suppressed cursing, etc. Even cut and paste! I have all the wrong shortcut reflexes and it really messes me up.

And I have my phone, but I am old (in technology years) and really not good at doing anything work-like of any length on my phone. This stupid post is taking me more than fifteen minutes.

My daughter laughs when she sees me try to do things on my phone. I want to tell her that I used to hand-code my own HTML and could read UNIX man pages, and incidentally, here is why emacs is superior to vi — but I would’ve lost her at HTML.

Main consequence of all this is that I’m way more offline than I planned to be, and probably will continue to be until I get back Saturday. So if you need me urgently this week, please text. I’m also five hours earlier than Chicago.

Photo of a local slug? Snail? Which is how I feel trying to work on a PC, but am probably much less competent at navigating my environment than it is.
