The students in my food writing class have just finished a big paper, so before we dive into the next food novel (Robin Sloane’s _Sourdough_, recommended!), I’m giving them a break with a little poetry today. A palate-cleanser, or amuse-bouche, one might say. ![]()
Btw, although we only had time to read about a quarter of Asako Yuzuki’s _Butter_, they actually ended up liking it a lot, and I think it was a great choice for this class — tons to talk about re: gender, class, culture, formation of self. The murder part was fun too, and helped keep their attention. Recommended for teaching, and for reading. I don’t remember who suggested this book to me, but thanks!
Here are today’s poems, in case you’d like a little amuse-bouche to start your own day. Warning, though — the last line of “Gooseberry Fool” made me want to cry. Too apropos to the current moment and politics, I think.
All poems from Eat, Drink and Be Merry: Poems about food and drink. This would be a nice little gift book, for someone who appreciates food and language. Maybe I’ll stock it in my store. ![]()
